Paper Assignment #1: Individual Differences and Abnormal Psychology
In our class, we review several ways in which culture, gender and social factors influence
whether or not someone might be more likely to be identified as suffering with an abnormal
psychological condition. Using your knowledge from our textbook and other sources, match
each one of these factors to a specific psychological condition discussed in our class. In
addition, please specify how these factors individually, or in combination, might contribute to
certain identity groups being more represented in one or more psychological conditions. For
instance (and you can’t use these examples: Black youth are more likely to be diagnosed with
Conduct disorder; Women are more likely to be diagnosed with Borderline Personality
Disorder; people from lower SES are more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, etc.) Be
sure to provide specific theoretical rationale and references to support your
speculations.
